Why Wool and Down?

Find out why we combined two of nature’s finest insulators.

In short, the blend of merino wool and down was done to maximise the benefits of both to create optimal climate control. Blown between Pertex baffles, the wool maintains the down’s loft and stays warm, even when wet. The down adds a very high warmth-to-weight ratio yet ensures your garment is easily stored in your pack. The result is lightweight, breathable and packable insulation that’s still warm, even when wet.

Sustainability

This is still a priority for us at Mons, ensuring we are reducing both the riders and our own impact on the world around us, (You can read more about our Sustainability journey soon). So, ensuring not only our wool is reaching a responsible standard but also anything else we utilise is vitally important. Our down meets the RDS (Responsible Down Standard) as outlined by Textile Exchange, making it a more environmentally friendly option than synthetic alternatives.

Responsibly Sourced.

We source sustainable natural fibres from an ethical supply chain to create high-performance apparel for every mission.

Moisture Management and Warmth

We know the outdoors can be unpredictable, that’s why we love it, the adventure of the unknown is what calls us. But we need to know we are protected when things get wet, both from the weather and ourselves – we all know that feeling, hot, cold, hot, cold, wet, hot, cold.

Wool has natural moisture-wicking properties, it can absorb and release moisture without feeling damp, when we add down (An excellent insulator but loses this when it becomes wet) the wool helps manage moisture and prevents the down from becoming saturated. Synthetics on the other hand, well clammy isn’t a world we like to experience.

Another bonus is warmth, this is where the blend of wool and down comes into its own, providing the best of both worlds. Down on its own is an excellent insulator and provides warmth without bulk of a synthetic, while wool adds additional warmth and can help trap heat close to the body when you need it, simply heaven.

Versatility and Durability

One way we can look at reducing our impact as a business is ensuring our products are versatile making it suitable for any mission (Which means you need to pack less!), but having a versatile product is only good if that product is also durable as you expose it to more mountains, more bumps and more extremes.

Synthetics, breakdown and lose their effectiveness over time, especially with repeated washing which given the smell you need to, wool and its natural durability can better withstand wear and tear and means that adding it to down will prolong the life of a garment that will be worn frequently.

So, when that overnight bike packing trip suddenly turns into a high-country shoulder season hiking expedition, that then ends with you at the local you it’s time to get down with wool, you are prepared for anything and everything.
